first question is that I am going in for surgery april 23, 2007 with Dr. Cole for 1200 FIT Grafts, little nervous on what to expect........ wanted to plan according for my job so how many days should I give myself for scabbing to be virtually gone?

and also I wanted to eventually come off propecia and just continue rogaine, I feel alot of the side effects of the propecia do effect me and was wondering if just rogaine alone will be good enough to keep up with saving my remaining hair? thanks for listening

You can expect scabs the first and second week after the procedure. You can use post operative products to accelerate the healing like the Biotin Spray that has ingredients to help digest protein debris and crust on the scalp. It also has antioxidants, wound healing and anti-inflammatories.

We recommend stopping Propecia and Rogaine 5 days before the procedure and start to take Propecia one week later and Rogaine two weeks later.

Studies of Propecia have shown it has better results that Rogaine. It is better to use Propecia, Rogaine and Haircycle products for synergetic results!

All of my procedures with Dr. Cole I have been "crust-less" at 7 to 10 days. My existing hair camoflaged the grafts nicely.
Last procedure I used the Biotin spray, crusts were gone by about 6 days (along with appropriate shampooing once or twice a day post-op).

As far as the propecia/minox questions: it's hard to know. Sometimes coming off Propecia can lead to a "catch-up", where hair loss can progress to where it might have been without the Propecia; minoxidil MAY help with significant loss, but there is no guarantee. The best way to do Propecia, IMHO, is to try it and make a judgement about side effects within the first 2 to 4 weeks and then decide whether or not to continue. This avoids this kind of quandary.

Checking many pictures of successful HT in several forums I see that the hair quality and density of the patients is very much improved. Many of these patients report using a mix of 3 or more products so I assume some part of the great results come from the drug treatment.

My question is: If I get a HT and do not use propecia, what kind of results will i get?
In other words, does propecia have an effect on the survival of the transplanted grafts?

Thanks

Dear Hope, I am not sure if propecia really effect the transplanted hairs, but if you have existing hair like most hair transplant patients then know that propecia can keep and even increase hair growth in the area surrounding the hair transplant if taken one month before the surgery (the latest) and continue for at list one year after. Propecia can help to maintain the your surrounding hair post-op surgery and is therefore useful as an additament to hair transplant surgery, to enable the patient to obtain a better overall result.
