Dr. Cole and the team performed over 5,000 grafts during this FIT/BHT mega-session. The patient was in his late seventies and had a high degree of hair loss, particularly in his crown area.
Early on in the consult process the patient indicated that he would not be able to shave his head. This was a problem given the large amount of grafts needed. With FIT we can easily conceal the work in the donor if a small number of grafts are removed. On the other hand, if many thousands of grafts are needed, as in this case, we usually need to shave down the entire donor site. In order to avoid the shave down, we proposed a strip harvest in combination with body hair transplantation. Ultimately, the patient did not want to treat his hair loss with an invasive surgery like strip hair transplantation, so an FIT solution was needed where the donor area could be concealed.
Luckily our patient liked to wear his hair a bit longer than most. We were able to shave the majority of the donor site while still leaving the perimeter long. The hair length in the unclipped part of the donor was such that after the extractions were done, the hair could be draped over the removal sites. While this strategy was not perfect, it did enable easy donor camouflage post-op. We were able to safely extract 2,898 FIT grafts from the scalp alone.
The total graft count for this procedure was 5,023 (2,898 scalp, 2125 body). These units were distributed over the scalp to the address the crown area and rebuild the frontal hairline and temple points. |
