Temp Use of Propecia?

Dr Cole,

I recently had a 2000 graft transplant. It went very well.

I use rogaine regularly but don't use propecia because of the sexual side effects. However, in 2 to 3 month post op stage after surgery, if I use propecia, will that help the graft growth or reduce the chance of shock loss ( I had alot of grafts implanted for density). In other words, is it worth using in the short term right after my transplant.

Also, is there a cheaper alternative to rogaine?

Glad the procedure went well.

Taking propecia and minoxidil before and after the procedure can prevent shockloss. But hairloss at the 3 month mark will not be due to shock loss. This would be the progressive nature of balding. It is better to be on the meds with HT but not if these drugs are causing side effects. If you are afraid that not using propecia will hamper the final result, don't worry. Do the minox.

Rogain is minoxidil. Try to find generic minoxidil at the drug store. This is usually cheaper.

If you didn't use propecia in the past then try it, it will definitely help you.
only 5 percent of males have side effect with propecia. I personally had more side effects from minoxidill...so i stopped and switched to Propecia.
When you stop taking propecia or minoxidill the side effect will stop after 2 weeks MAX..

My apologies 2000NG! I though you were suggesting that you actually experienced side effects with propecia in the past. As Forhair mentions, try it if you have not already...side effects are rare Smile

Propecia takes about 5 months to take affect. It will not speed up your results. It is much better for hair growth than Rogaine, in my opinion, though both Rogaine and Propecia are better than either alone.

Propecia causes sexual dysfuncition in only a small percentage of individuals who use it. therefore, you can safely use it most of the time. if you discontinue using it, your sexual funcition will return to normal within 60 to 90 days.

2% minoxidil is available over the counter in generic form. you will find that this works just as well as Rogaine and about 8 to 10.00 per month last time i looked.

I do not think you will get any benefit from short term propecia. the main benefit from propecia is long term. long term you see less hair loss. it will not speed up growth of grafts.
